Why is there so much mould in my Peterborough Home ?

Wet windows every morning, damp patches on the walls, black mould that comes back however often you clean it. If that's your Peterborough home, you're not alone, and it is fixable.

Condensation is the most common damp problem in UK homes, worst between October and March when windows stay shut and moisture builds up inside. A bit of condensation is normal. Persistent condensation leads to mould, ruined decoration and poor air quality, and it won't go away on its own.

Understanding what's causing it is the first step to fixing it for good.

What causes excess condensation in Peterborough homes?

Condensation forms when warm, moist air meets a cold surface: a window, an external wall, a ceiling under a cold loft. The air cools, and the water vapour in it turns back into droplets.

Everyday life puts a surprising amount of water into the air:

  • Cooking and showering: steam, especially where the extractor fan is weak or never used
  • Drying clothes indoors: a single load releases around two litres of water into the house
  • Poor ventilation: with no airflow, that moisture has nowhere to go
  • Cold surfaces: poor insulation and cold bridges give the moisture somewhere to settle
  • Blocked airflow: furniture hard against an external wall traps damp air behind it

We see it in Victorian terraces around the city centre, in 1960s and 70s estates like Bretton and Werrington, and in modern flats in Hampton that are built airtight with no background ventilation.

Why condensation gets worse in winter

As the temperature drops, windows and external walls get colder while cooking, bathing and breathing carry on producing moisture. Keeping the windows shut to hold the heat in cuts ventilation further, so humid air just accumulates.

Bedrooms are the worst affected. Two people breathing out moisture for eight hours in a closed room, while the glass drops to near-outside temperature, is why the windows are streaming by morning.

If that's your situation, start with our guide on how to stop condensation on windows overnight.

Is it condensation, or another kind of damp?

Not every damp patch is condensation, and the fix is different for each, so it pays to get the diagnosis right.

Condensation shows up around windows, in the corners of rooms, behind furniture and anywhere airflow is restricted. It's often worse in the mornings.

Other kinds of damp:

  • Rising damp: moisture coming up through the walls from the ground, usually with a tide mark up to about a metre high
  • Penetrating damp: water getting in through a damaged roof, gutter, brickwork or pointing, often one patch that grows after rain
  • Plumbing leaks: a localised patch under a bathroom, radiator or pipe run

These need a repair, not better ventilation. Our survey checks for them before we recommend anything, and if we find a leak rather than condensation we'll say so.

Peterborough City Council also publishes damp and mould guidance for tenants and homeowners at peterborough.gov.uk.

How to reduce condensation in your Peterborough home

1. Ventilate every day

Keep trickle vents open. Don't block air bricks or permanent vents. Open a window for ten minutes after showering.

2. Use the extractor fans, and make sure they work

Run the fan when cooking and showering, and leave it running for 15 minutes afterwards. Hold a sheet of paper to it: if it doesn't hold the paper, it isn't doing anything. Upgrading to high-performance extractor fans is often the cheapest big improvement.

3. Make less moisture

Lids on pans. Dry washing outside or in a room with the door shut and the window open. If you must dry indoors, use a dehumidifier in that room.

4. Keep the heating steady

A low, constant background temperature keeps surfaces warmer than short bursts of heat. Cold walls are what the moisture condenses onto.

5. Let the air move

Pull wardrobes and beds a few centimetres off external walls. Wipe the windows and sills in the morning so the water doesn't soak into the frames.

These steps help. If you're doing all of them and still getting condensation in several rooms, the house needs a proper ventilation solution.

Can PIV installation fix condensation?

Where poor ventilation is the cause, a positive input ventilation (PIV) system is the long-term fix. A small unit in the loft (or on a wall if there's no loft) pushes a continuous, gentle supply of filtered air into the home. That dilutes the humid air and pushes it out through the natural leakage points of the house.

A correctly specified system brings condensation down within days, improves air quality throughout the house and removes the conditions mould needs. It runs continuously for pennies a day.

We supply and fit loft-mounted and wall-mounted heated systems across the city: see PIV installation in Peterborough. Our engineer assesses the property first and only installs if PIV will solve the problem.

Why does black mould keep coming back?

Because the moisture is still there. Cleaning mould off the wall treats the symptom. The spores land again on the same damp surface and regrow within weeks.

The fix is in two parts: remove the existing mould properly, then fix the ventilation so it can't return. PIV does the second part but not the first. For the first, we offer professional mould removal and treatment, often on the same visit as the ventilation work.
